Indian renewable energy developer Azure Power has announced this week that it has won a contract to deliver 20 MW of solar rooftop installations for Indian Railways.

As the largest rail network in Asia, Indian Railways hopes that its program to electrify all of its railway stations with solar power can have a positive impact on the country’s emissions footprint.

This latest allocation for Azure Power places the developer as the largest supplier of solar power to Indian Railways, with a cumulative awarded capacity of 66 MW.

Azure Roof power will be employed to provide capacity to various rail facilities across 17 states and union territories. The solar power will be sold at a tariff in the range of INR 3.64 – 4.49 ($0.06 – 0.07) based on location.

Recently Azure Power won the largest rooftop PV allocation in India, with a capacity of 50 MW, and the developer is making a sizeable contribution towards India’s competitive target of 175 GW of renewable capacity by 2022. Azure power’s portfolio is one of the largest in India, with more than 150 MW of solar assets installed across 20 states.

Indrapreet Wadhwa, founder and CEO of Azure Power, said: “Azure Roof Power offer tremendous value to our customers across various segments. We are pleased to expand our Azure Roof Power platform with Indian Railways. With this win, we have once again demonstrated our strong project development capabilities and are delighted to make this contribution towards the realization of our Honorable Prime Minister’s commitment towards clean and green energy through solar power generation.”
