Tecchren joins the race to make lithium ion batteries in India

With prime minister Narendra Modi leading the Indian government’s focus on incentives to promote local manufacturing of li ion batteries – crucial for electric vehicle adoption – the list of companies willing to manufacture them in India is getting longer.

The latest contender is Tecchren Batteries, which has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Andhra Pradesh Economic Development Board to set up a lithium ion battery unit in the state.

The manufacturer is a subsidiary of Tecchren Inc, a U.S. company incorporating Asian, North American and European professionals with experience in technology, operations, finance, policymaking and environmental issues. Tecchren Inc has been involved in the pre-development activities of large-scale solar plants in South East Asia and manufactures and distributes advanced Lithium Ferro Phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries in India, the USA and the Philippines.

Last year, U.S. rival Triton Solar signed an MoU for a solar battery manufacturing unit in Andhra Pradesh under a public-private partnership model. The Rs727 crore Triton plant will produce batteries based on nano and lithium polymer technology, and the facility will be developed in phases. It aims to reach an annual production capacity of 200 MW.

Essel Infraprojects is among the other companies planning to manufacture lithium ion batteries in Andhra Pradesh. “The company is in talks to acquire lithium mines abroad and plans to set up a plant in Andhra Pradesh for manufacturing these batteries for electric cars,” reported Livemint last year.
