State-owned engineering major Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has won an order for supply of state-of-the-art electric buses along with charging infrastructure for Gorakhpur City in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

The order has been placed on BHEL by the Urban Transport Directorate (UTD), Lucknow.

These low-floor, disabled-friendly electric buses will be deployed by the UTD at the Gorakhpur airport.

“This is in line with company’s transformation initiative of expanding into new markets/businesses. Further, as part of transformation journey, BHEL is consolidating and reinvigorating the initiatives taken in defence & aerospace, water, e-mobility, batteries, renewables and transportation businesses”—read BHEL statement.

The tender for these buses was floated by the UTD in January this year. As per the tender requirements, the selected bidder [BHEL] is required to design, manufacture, supply and commission AC electric low floor buses. The entire cost of charging infrastructure including cost of charging equipment and installation shall have to be incurred by the contractor.
