The Indian state of Gujarat aims to install around 8 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of green hydrogen production capacity by 2035.
“Gujarat aims to become the world center for green hydrogen by creating an estimated 8 mtpa production capacity in another 10-12 years. It will help give pace to the development of green production of energy-intensive industries of fertilizers, steel, chemicals, and petroleum,” state industries minister Balwantsinh Rajput was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
Gujarat has installed a cumulative 8.5 GW of solar capacity and 9.86 GW of wind as of December 31, 2022. It is going to host the world’s largest hybrid renewable energy park of 30 GW in Kutch. Spread over 72,600 hectares, this park will have an area as big as Singapore or Bahrain. The large renewables capacity makes a strong business case for green hydrogen production in Gujarat as the state focuses on greening industrial production.
The minister said Gujarat has sufficient land available to support the production of solar and green energy, green hydrogen, and ammonium production.
