The IIT Madras (IITM) Research Park has launched a large-scale 1 MWh lithium-ion battery storage system This ready-to-deploy and modular battery storage system is charged with wind and solar energy and raises the campus’s renewable energy share to 90%.

The technology, indigenously designed and developed by the Center for Excellence in Energy & Telecommunications (CEET), is a part of IITM Research Park’s 10x initiative, ‘Towards 100% Renewable Energy’.

As buildings move towards installing their own renewable energy systems, reliable storage solutions are imperative and yet the unavailability of such technology remains a challenge, underscoring a critical gap.

IITM stated their battery storage system will serve as a model for commercial complexes, and manufacturing units aiming to transition to entirely green energy while remaining profitable.

IIT Madras Research Park has formed the “Zero to Green Alliance” to replicate this approach widely across the buildings and industrial sector and aims to drive action to accelerate the transition towards a net-zero future.

Following the launch, a round-table discussion, joined by Palanivel Thiagarajan, Minister of Information Technology and Digital Services of Tamil Nadu, was held with select delegates across industry, startups and academia focusing on climate change and renewable energy to devise strategies on how the Research Park and the United States can work together in co-developing technologies.

Industry leaders and startups from the Research Park, along with IIT Madras professors and subject matter experts shared expertise on sustainable heating and cooling, large storage batteries, hydrogen, solar, wind energy, sustainability, recycling, and cybersecurity for energy systems.
