NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam (NVVN) Ltd has revised its tender for setting up 500 MWh (250 MW x 2 hours) of interstate transmission system (ISTS) connected standalone battery energy storage system (BESS). Proposals for now invited for setting up 1,000 MWh (500 MW x 2 hours) of standalone BESS with double cycles charging/discharging operation of BESS. The total 1,000 MWh BESS capacity will be distributed and connected at 220 kV to two identified ISTS Substations with maximum capacity up to 250 MW/500 MWh at each substation.
NVVN seeks to utilize the energy storage systems, on an “on-demand” basis, suited to the requirements during the peak and off-peak hours.
Selection of BESS projects will be carried out through e-bidding followed by e-reverse auction process. The minimum bid size will be 100 MWh, i.e., 50 MW x 2 hours. The cumulative project capacity to be allocated to a bidder is 250 MW/500 MWh.
NVVN will enter into a battery energy storage purchase agreement (BESPA) with the successful bidders, to avail the energy storage facility for sale in the power exchange or bilateral sale to discoms/C&I sector or in ancillary services.

Why is this Energy Storage “Tender” limited only to Batteries and NOT other Technologies… Pumped Hydro, Hydrogen, CAES, Flywheel, etc.. etc…
NTPC has to make up its mind if it wants (2hr) Energy Storage to meet its needs or promote Batteries provided by their “patrons” only… 👎👎👎👎👎👎
