Torrent Power Ltd has emerged as a successful bidder and received Letter of Intent (LoI) from Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Co. Ltd (MSEDCL) for procurement of 1.5 GW/ 12 GWh energy storage capacity from pumped hydro storage project.
MSEDCL will procure 1.5 GW energy storage capacity from Torrent Power’s pumped hydro storage project for a period of 40 years.
Torrent Power plans to supply the storage capacity from its upcoming pumped hydro storage plant being set up in Raigad District, Maharashtra. Under the pumped hydro energy storage facility agreement, it will make available to MSEDCL a contracted capacity of 1.5 GW capable of scheduled discharge of 8 hours (with maximum continuous 5 hours) per day. The input energy for charging shall be provided by MSEDCL.
Increased penetration of solar and wind in electricity generation will create need for energy storage solutions for providing firm, reliable and dispatchable RE power. Torrent Power has identified pumped storage project (PSP) sites in multiple states. The company intends to install about 5 to 8 GW of PSP capacity entailing investment of INR 25,000 crore to INR 35,000 crores. As part of its growth strategy, the company is also working on green hydrogen and green ammonia production projects.

5-8 GW of PSP for 12hr/day, comes to 60-96GWhr/DAY or 22-35TWh/yr… at the EXISTING (??) Hydro Sites something that Hydrogen Storage will struggle to achieve..
In a ZERO POLLUTION BHARAT, BY 2050, it will need a 15TW, 18,000 TWh/yr PV System (using <100,000km2 of Bharat's 2.2 Million kn2 of Farmland) to meet ALL ITS ENERGY NEEDS and 4,000TWh/yr of S2S Energy Storage.
This Initiative of 22-35 TWh/yr is commendable and will assist Bharat in achieving a ZERO POLLUTION BHARAT by 2050 with 24hr/day Pollution Free Solar Electricity… 👍👍👍👍
