This will inspire local economic growth by creating jobs in installation, maintenance, and renewable energy production sector, fostering skill development and empowering communities to become self-sufficient.
By maximizing the use of clean renewable energy, microgrids with BESS reduce dependence on fossil fuels thereby making the environment cleaner and healthier. Moreover, these can contribute largely to India’s ambitious clean energy targets.
One example of how microgrids with energy storage are revolutionizing the remote areas of India is the initiative taken by a major power company in collaboration with the World Bank. Over 100 households in the remote tribal villages of Jharkhand are benefiting from reliable electricity provided by microgrids, powered by solar and wind, with battery storage. This has improved the quality of life and education in these communities, while providing them with the means to engage in income-generating activities, which promotes economic growth and social development.
The road ahead
Considering advancement in battery technologies leading to lowering of their costs and more supportive government policies, the near future of microgrids in India with energy storage indeed looks bright. With improved economic viability and efficiency, many remote regions are likely to soon adopt these systems, bridging the energy gap in less privileged areas and empowering local communities.
