How microgrids with energy storage empower remote communities

Share

A microgrid is essentially a mini power grid that operates independently or in tandem with the central grid. Unlike the conventional model of centralized power generation, microgrids rely on renewable sources of energy such as solar and wind, providing a sustainable and local means of electricity production. This provides the remote communities with energy independence from the variations and disturbances in the national grid, further reducing their dependency on fossil fuels by tapping clean and renewable sources of energy. In addition, microgrids may offer a more valuable alternative to relying solely on expensive diesel generators, particularly in regions where fuel transportation costs are high.

The missing link: Energy storage for uninterrupted power

Microgrids have significant potential, although they are challenged by the intermittent supply of solar power and wind energy. Solar energy is limited to daylight hours, and wind patterns are unpredictable. In these scenarios, energy storage becomes crucial, as it effectively manages these fluctuations.

Battery energy storage systems (BESS) can store excess energy generated during peak sunlight or wind hours. This stored energy becomes readily available when renewable generation dips, ensuring uninterrupted power supply throughout the day and night. This will also significantly improve the reliability of microgrid power supply, offering a dependable source of electricity for critical services like healthcare facilities and schools.

Benefits beyond backup

Integration of energy storage into microgrids will empower people with access to lighting, refrigeration, and communication technologies, fostering education and healthcare improvement. This will inspire local economic growth by creating jobs in installation, maintenance, and renewable energy production sector, fostering skill development and empowering communities to become self-sufficient.

By maximizing the use of clean renewable energy, microgrids with BESS reduce dependence on fossil fuels thereby making the environment cleaner and healthier. Moreover, these can contribute largely to India’s ambitious clean energy targets.

One example of how microgrids with energy storage are revolutionizing the remote areas of India is the initiative taken by a major power company in collaboration with the World Bank. Over 100 households in the remote tribal villages of Jharkhand are benefiting from reliable electricity provided by microgrids, powered by solar and wind, with battery storage. This has improved the quality of life and education in these communities, while providing them with the means to engage in income-generating activities, which promotes economic growth and social development.

The road ahead

Considering advancement in battery technologies leading to lowering of their costs and more supportive government policies, the near future of microgrids in India with energy storage indeed looks bright. With improved economic viability and efficiency, many remote regions are likely to soon adopt these systems, bridging the energy gap in less privileged areas and empowering local communities.

Microgrids with energy storage represent a powerful tool in illuminating the path towards a more equitable and sustainable energy future in India. By empowering remote communities with reliable and clean power, these systems have the potential to transform lives, economies, and the environment.
