Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu said recently the state government cannot scrap power offtake contracts for Adani Green Energy Ltd’s solar projects without concrete proof establishing bribery charges.
The solar projects under controversy were awarded to AGEL under SECI’s manufacturing-linked solar tender. US prosecutors have charged Gautam Adani and other executives with a bribery scheme involving payments to Indian officials to secure solar energy supply contracts for these projects. As alleged in the indictment, between approximately 2020 and 2024 [the time period when YSR Congress Party was in power in Andhra Pradesh], the defendants agreed to pay bribes to Indian officials to obtain lucrative solar energy supply contracts.
Naidu said the state government can’t back out of contracts unless concrete proof is available. “We will have to pay stiff penalty. No action can be taken until concrete proof is obtained,” he said.
