Indian multinational Larsen & Toubro has been selected by Emirati state-owned renewable investment company Masdar as one of the preferred engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractors for the world’s first 24/7 solar PV and battery storage gigascale project that will be built in Abu Dhabi.

The project is being developed by Masdar in partnership with EWEC (Emirates Water and Electricity Co.). It will combine 5.2 GW of solar with 19 GWh of battery storage to produce 1 GW of continuous baseload renewable energy.

The project will be located across an area of land in the Abu Dhabi desert spanning 90 square km. It will constitute a north site and a south site, amounting to 2.6 GW and 9.5 GWh PV capacity each. Larsen & Toubro said that its renewables business vertical is one of preferred EPC partners for the north site of the project.

The Letter of Award was signed by Abdulaziz Alobaidli, chief operating officer, Masdar, and A Ravindran, senior vice president & head – Renewables IC, L&T, in the presence of T Madhava Das, whole-time director & sr. executive vice president (utilities), L&T.
