NTPC commits over INR 2 lakh crore investment in Madhya Pradesh

NTPC, India’s largest integrated energy company, has committed to invest over INR 2 lakh crore in setting up renewable projects based on solar, wind, pump hydro and other carbon neutral energy sources in the state of Madhya Pradesh. Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) for these projects were signed between NTPC, its arm NTPC Green Energy Ltd (NGEL) and the state government of Madhya Pradesh during the Global Investors Summit, being held at Bhopal on Feb 24-25, 2025.

NGEL and Madhya Pradesh Power Generating Co. Ltd (MPPGCL) have signed an MoU for setting up renewable energy projects up to 20 GW or more in the state, with an investment of around INR 1,20,000 crore. NGEL and MPPGCL will implement the projects through a joint venture company. “[The projects] will help in mitigating the Renewable Generation Obligation (RGO) of Madhya Pradesh Generating Co. as well as Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) of Madhya Pradesh DISCOMs,” stated the NTPC release.

NTPC Ltd and the state government of Madhya Pradesh signed an MoU for other sustainable non-fossil fuel power plants at an estimated investment of INR 80,000 crore.  Madhya Pradesh Power Management Co. Ltd (MPPMCL) signed this MOU on behalf of the state govt.

An agreement was also signed between the government of Madhya Pradesh and NTPC for intent to invest around INR 4,000 crore in setting up 800 MW of pumped hydro storage project in the state.

NTPC Ltd. is India’s largest integrated power utility, contributing one-fourth of the India’s power requirements and has an installed capacity of over 77 GW, with an additional capacity of 29.5 GW under construction, including 9.6 GW of renewable energy capacity. The company is committed to achieving 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032.
