India added 23,8323 MW of solar capacity in FY2025 (April 2024- March 2025). This is 58.5% higher than the annual PV installation in FY2024.
The annual PV installations in FY 2025 included 16.9 GW from utility-scale solar projects, which represents a 47% increase compared to the previous year’s installations. JMK attributed the accelerated deployment of utility-scale projects to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy MNRE’s 2023 mandate for 50 GW of tender issuance and strong momentum in the green open access (off-site C&I) market driven by corporate decarbonization initiatives and decline in module prices in the second half of FY2024.
In the rooftop solar segment, about 5,148 MW was installed during the year, marking a 72% increase from the previous year. “This growth was primarily driven by the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, which facilitated significant capacity additions in the residential sector,” stated JMK Research.
In the off-grid/distributed solar segment, around 1,785 MW was added, nearly three times the capacity added in the previous year.
Rajasthan (6,431 MW), Gujarat (3,268 MW), and Maharashtra (2,146 MW) led the solar installations in FY2025.
Gujarat installed the highest rooftop solar capacity in FY2025 with 1,649 MW, followed by Maharashtra (1,227 MW) and Kerala (515 MW).
According to Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) data, India’s total installed renewable energy (RE) capacity has reached 220 GW as of FY 2025. Solar energy accounts for around 48% of the total RE capacity followed by wind energy (23%), large hydro (22%), bio power (5%) and small hydro (2%).
